The auto industry just seems to be getting greener and greener, not completely in deference to the move toward eco-friendly transportation either. A lot of it just has to do with being first in the field or keeping up with the Fords and Toyota’s.
But Mercedes-Benz has entered the green ring again, just as promised, and your Mercedes dealer Virginia can’t wait to see the new SLS AMG E-Cell. It stems (no pun intended) from the SLS AMG supercar revealed last year at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The company promised then to build a green version and now that’s apparently come to fruition (okay, enough with the puns).
The E-Cell uses the SLS AMG body and mostly keeps the suspension intact, but the 6.3-liter V8 engine obviously had to go. It’s been replaced by four electric motors with one near each wheel. The 400 volt lithium ion battery pack cranks out 48 kilowatt hours.
And look at these impressive statistics: the SLS AMG E-Cell can reach 60 mph in only four seconds. That’s less than a half second more than the gas engine model. Fairfax Mercedes SL Class buyers will appreciate the power in this machine.
With 526 horsepower the E-Cell pulls almost as much power as the regular engine SLS AMG but has all-wheel drive because of the electric motors at each wheel. This also gives the E-Cell an advantage when cornering.
There’s no word yet on the range of the E-Cell, but surely Mercedes-Benz will endeavor to compete with rival brands that are getting up to 100 miles on a single charge. That may be a nugget they wish to save for later. We would love to know now, though. And some details on the available features would be great too.
Retaining the ceramic brakes found on the SLS AMG, the E-Cell adds in regenerative braking as many hybrid and electric models have. The E-Cell also utilizes a liquid cooling and heating element which keeps the battery pack at a steady temperature and preserves its life.
When it comes to production of the SLS AMG E-Cell, Mercedes is quiet once again, but with the Nissan Leaf set to hit the market later this year and other automakers working on all-electric models,
Mercedes-Benz likely will put it into production as quickly as possible. Customers of Mercedes dealer Virginia will be able to stay informed by visiting their dealer’s website and watching for any peek at the new SLS AMG E-Cell model.
While Mercedes lovers wait for the E-Cell they have many other models to check out in the showroom. Mercedes models have earned many awards in recent months and Fairfax Mercedes SL Class owners can attest that quality runs deep in the Mercedes fleet.
